Neurology & Neurosurgery

The Department has been a center of excellence here. As our eminent consultants have special knowledge and interest in specific neurological diseases, subspecialty clinics with dedicated OPDs are set up. They give more focused attention to patients with frequent neurological disorders, closely monitor their disease, adjust medications and advise alternative therapy when medications fail to control the disease or become refractory.

There are many types of neurological disorders, including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease (AD)
  • Epilepsy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Migraines

Following diagnosis, our Department offers a range of treatment options, including medications (topical, oral, and intravenous), device-based therapies (such as deep brain stimulation), surgeries (such as procedures to remove tumors), physical therapy, and rehabilitation. A neurological exam will test muscle strength, reflexes, and coordination. Since different disorders can have similar symptoms, your neurologist may need more testing to make a diagnosis.

Q.   What are the Signs of Stroke?

A.   When it comes to a stroke, the best way to determine whether someone is having one is to think F.A.S.T. (Face, Arm, Speech, Time)

  • Face. Does the face look uneven? Ask the person to smile.
  • Arms. Does one arm drift down? Ask the person to raise both arms.
  • Speech. Does their speech sound strange? Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase.

Q.   What is a Neurological Examination Like?

A.   Your neurologist will review your patient health history, paying special attention to the condition that you are currently experiencing.
